its called friend requesting.

You can send a message to anyone on myspace thru their front page, unless they specifically set up their profile to accept email only from their friends.  Give it a shot and if it does not work, there is really no work-around.  If you know the person, just ask him/her to allow you to be their friend.  

This is a good feature that Myspace introduced in order to reduce the chances that some random creep would contact someone, especially minors.

in a friend request to someone you can now send a message along with it, and decide if you want that person to see your real name or not. so really a friend request is the only way around it now, and you only get one chance so make it good.
