  1. don't waste your time - takes too long to breed enough of them and for them to grow to a good size to make it worth your while... check out the local streams & ponds for shiners or suckers (they work great about 3-5" long) and use a net or cast net to catch them.  Be sure to check the local laws concerning this though.

  2. Raising feeder minnows for fishing is actually very easy if you are set up with a nice sized aquarium or small pond. I raised minnows(shiners) in TX. for fishing some years back because the bait shack was usually out of them when I wanted to go freshwater fishing. Each female shiner can lay several hundred eggs to a thousand depending on species you have. In one year you could have all the shiners you need and more for years to come. I used a 50 gal aquarium that I had bought at a garage sale for a cheap price. I have been raising tropical freshwater and saltwater reef fish for about 35yrs now in my home. If you don't know how to cycle a tank or a pond before introducing fish to them then read up on it , very important. I would try to use a 25gal tank or bigger if I were you, this helps  prevent stunt of growth. A good bottom filter and a top filter are needed as well. Big schools of feeder fish need the extra filtration, easy to install. Lay some breeding grass on the bottom(pet store) of the tank. After tank has cycled and all levels are checked, PH, ammonia, nitrite, then add a dozen shiners. Use a heater and set to perfect breeding temps. Remove the adult shiners when the small fry start to appear. I kept my minnow tank out in the garage with a heater during the winter time. Feed them fish flake food you get in any pet store twice a day and watch em grow. I also used them to feed my oscars and a few other fish I had. 40yr exp

  3. I have to agree with Joe. Check the fish & game laws for bait and any restrictions on daily limits, what species you can use and any net restrictions. Then you can find a good location and bait it up to keep your shiners hanging around that area. Good quality cast nets are inexpensive and can last you a long time. I've had mine for 30 years. That baby doesn't owe me a dime. Good luck & tight lines!

  4. buy a net, listen to those two.dont be shy just learn how to cast the net.i get everything from the area i fish for longterm enhancement of this sport.
