I am trying to help a friend find a way of finding her adopted daughter's birth mother. All papers she has does not show mothers name. Only the state and and town, as she came from a small orphanage run by a missionary, but there has got to be some way of finding something that can lead to her natural mother. Or if anyone has any info that could help us, maybe an organisation that deals with this type situation and could possibly give us help in what steps to take in order to find the information we need.

  1. Here is the place I would start.  I have seen numerous pages that specialize in international adoption searches.  Some include names of agencies or orphanages, and yes, some DO offer help to identify parents with birth children.

I would not expect to find mom posting on a website, like we are used to.  It is more likely that mom lives in poverty, and doesn't have a computer or access to one.

  2. There are two sources. The first and easiest would be to track down the missionary and let them try to get in contact with the birth mother.

The second is to contact the US State Department for the documentation in the child's INS file.

The internet is not going to help you much. Brazil, like much of South and Central America, is not internet-inclined. There are probably very few computers in the town where she lives and it would probably never dawn on her to even use the internet to keep track of her child after giving up the little girl. One reality in that part of the world is that wealthy people don't put their children in orphanages to be adopted to other countries.

Finding the missionary is your best bet. If you'd like help with that, drop me a note and I'll see what can be found.
