the father has been absent since birth, and he is not listed on any paperwork, he has made no attempts to support her and didn't even want me to go through with the pregnancy. i made the mistake of giving her his last name, i really need to know how to legally change her surname without causing a confrontation with him. please give me detailed advice.

get the papers where you file for a marriage license. usually the county courthouse. fill em out. pay the filing fee. a few weeks later you will need to appear in court and explain to the judge why you want to change the name. as long as you arent trying to commit fraud its pretty much an automatic approval.

some courts also require you to post an ad in the classifieds first.
