Question:

How would i go about combining two different types of "plants"?

for instance strawberries with blueberries. if this particular combination isnt possible please explain why

  1. This particular cross is not possible because they are two entirely different families.  When you are doing crosses (via grafting or cross pollination) they have to be at least within the same genus in order to have alleles and genetic markers needed for growth and development.


  2. Traditionally, horticulturists would use hybridization or grafting to combine different plants. You can hybridize closely related species.  Blueberries and strawberries are so genetically different, you couldn't sexually cross them.  You couldn't graft the plants together since the tissues would not fuse together.

    One method that could possibly work is cytoplasmic fusion.  Single cells of each species would be treated with enzymes to remove the cell walls leaving intact cells.  Under specific conditions you might be able to fuse the two naked cells together creating a hybrid.  Whether or not a usable fruit would be produced is the question.  My feeling is that the plants are so different that the hybrid would not survive.
