dig a well for drinking water.

my parents are interested in doing this in two villages and we are wondering about the approx.cost( US dollars). (they have aready had an agricultural well dug there, but this time they want them to able to provide drinking water)

if u dig a well, the water might need a water softener...costs $1000.00 us.

if the well is deep, a pump might be needed at bottom of well.  in this case, u need a space for pressure tank that is 20" dia x 64" H.  if the well is shadow, 20' to 25' deep, the pump might be provided inside the building.  space for pump and tank should be 36" W x 20" D x 64"H.  costs $10 to $40/LF of well shaft + $4500....

chlorination, add hypochlorous acid, assume ph 7 of water=.2 mg/l after 10 minutes or 1.5 mg/l after added an hour.

fluoridation, add 1mg/l... assume cost of chlorination and fluoridation is minimal, and a shallow well of 25', and $40/LF=40(25)=1000+4500=5500...add cost of water soften, 5500+1000=$6500us.  this cost is as of 1995.

assume 10%inflation annually, F=P(1+i)^n...so $6500(1+.1)^13=$22,400us...now covert it to india dollars by the exchange rate and that should be u local cost.  before u install the well, u have to be approved by the local government.  the well must be 100ft from sewage disposal.  after drilling, test capacity for at least 4hr at a constand yield and drawn down.  for 8 plumbing fixtures, try a pump capacity of 16gpm.  pressure tank should be 42 gal minimum.  disinfect well and piping before putting into operation.
