  1. It's amazing how people come out of the woodwork, isn't it? And don't even read the question properly? IF homeschooling wasn't good socially, is homeschooling for a *single year* going to be THAT detrimental to a child?

In any case, you need to find out the laws where you live. You can try HSLDA, but don't rely on them as the final word as I've found that their information isn't always complete or updated. Your state education website will have the information and a homeschool support group for your state will also have the information. (Just do a search for yourstate homeschool.)

  2. Well...You either teach her yourself, or get tutors....But getting tutors wouldn't make much sense if you want to save up for a private school...You are spending the money you save...You should contact the school and ask what reading books they are using so he/she could stay on track...And then you should ask questions about the curriculum...Then you should make your OWN schedule on what to teach your child. It won't be that hard because I think your child is in kindergarten right? So if their school doesn't do much for kindergarten, you just ask what they DO teach them and kind of try and copy.

    Added Detail:

I also agree with Aunt Tater....It is not good to home school...It would prove to be incredibly challenging for your child...Just send your child to a public school...There is nothing wrong with them...Heck I go to a public school...They are awesome!

  3. Contact a local home school association or support group, and see if they can help you out by lending you a few basic curriculum books in math, language arts, and writing.

All other books needed can easily be borrowed from the library, then just add worksheets for free from the Internet.

You did not say what age your child was, but an inexpensive option is a web site called Enchanted Learning, it costs $20.00 per year, but they have everything you need to home school your child.

On the site is also a daily calendar that provides you with tons of social studies, and science idea's as well as links to  sites to expand on these subjects.

You can then print work sheets, or complete workbooks to use.

The list I am going to give you has a site for just about any subject you need to home school your child.

We use these sites regularly, they are fun, and help keep the cost to a minimum.

I printed the list and keep it on my desk for the kids to reference.

    have fun.

This site does require a $20.00 yearly fee to have full use of all their printable materials, but it is well worth it.

You can check them out for free, but it is a lot of curriculum in one place.

  4. AuntTater...Alec...please don't speak of what you do not know.  It only makes you look foolish.

Social suicide...whatever!  Like homeschool kids spend their day huddled around the kitchen table with the shades drawn?  I think my son - and the several thousand homeschooled kids in our area - would beg to differ.  They usually get more real-world social interaction than classroom schooled kids, and their maturity shows it.  True, they aren't age-dependent in their relationships...but news flash, that's *not* what socialization means.  Look it up.

Sorry, on to the question :-)

To get started in homeschooling, go to the following link and click on your state: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/default.as...

That will give you a quick chart showing the laws and regs, as well as a link (at the top of the page) showing an in-depth and up to date legal analysis for your state.

Next, I would really advise finding a homeschool group in your area, even if you don't end up joining.  The leader will allow you to ask whatever questions you want, which will give you specific info for your area.  Joining is a good idea though, since it offers support for you and field trips/social opps/etc. for your child.  Just google the name of your city or county and "homeschool group", and they'll pop up.

Third, depending on the age of your child, go ahead and order curriculum.  With a younger child, you can find TONS of curriculum online for free or cheap, if you're willing to put it together.  With an older child (I would say 3rd grade +), you'll need to go ahead and get the books, but you can still find tons of online resources.

I would suggest contacting the private school you're looking at having your child attend, and see what skills s/he will need for the upcoming year.  That would be one basis for the curriculum you choose.  The other basis would be his/her interests, learning style, and your comfort level at pulling together a curriculum.  You will find everything from a completely scripted curriculum (it actually bolds out everything you should say and tells you when to say it) to quick bullet points showing you what to cover.

Here's a good place to start looking for curriculum, they carry a large percentage of what's out there for a discount: http://www.rainbowresource.com/index.php

These are two good sources for "boxed" curriculum that is already put together by grade level:

    http://www.bjupress.com/webapp/wcs/store...

    http://www.abeka.com/

I also really like the following site, but make sure it'll fit well with what your child will need for private school the following year.  If nothing, they offer an *incredible* reading list, much of which you can find at the library. http://www.sonlight.com/

You didn't state how old your child is, so I tried to give a broad range of info that would apply to any age.  If you can clarify with a grade level or age, I'm sure the nice folks here can give you even more info :-)

And don't listen to the few ignorant people...they don't give advice, they give stereotypes.

  5. start at hslda.org they will give you the laws concerning your state. The people above me are uneducated in the home school world so pay them no heed. After that you need to figure out what kind of curriculum is best for your family. How old is the child? Do you want a christian education or secular? Does she learn better by reading, writing, hands on? Then start looking at them I recommend the 2 I've used and you'll get another 100 recommendation's. Mine are www.sonlight.com and ACE www.schooloftomorrow.com they offer free diagnostic testing on their site so that you can place them where they need to be. Any more questions please feel free to email me

  6. Home schooling is social homicide. Academics is not the only or the most important part of what is learned in school. Many home schooled children tend to have a lot of social problems. Don't do it.
