I am interested in starting stick fighting, but have not started yet. So far it is just an idea, so i don't want to go forking out unnecessary cash for equipment. How would you go about making an escrima stick, thats fairly durable and good for practice? Over time, if i find that i am enjoying the sport perhaps I will purchase the real thing.

  1. I always go to Home Depot and buy a dowel rod of appropriate thickness (1" is usually too think for me and my students) and cut it in half.  Standard Escrima are about 26" long, and cutting a dowel down makes them 24", so its not exact.  But its close enough for government work.....  And, being poplar wood, they are fairly durable unless you are beating them on metal.

One dowel will cost you about $3... or less depending on thickness.

  2. I would like to add that getting actual rattan sticks are a good investment "they last a lot longer" if you are joining a school. in the long run you would spend less money also if you do find some make sure they are less than $25 for a pair

  3. Go to the local store and get a wooden dowel about an inch thick and cut it to the appropriate length for you. Another possibility is just use a heavy broom handle and cut it down. (Make sure it's not your moms good one) Wrap it with duct tape or something similiar on the striking end. This will help keep it from splintering when working your strikes on a hard object.

This is the cheapest easiest way I know of. It will not be perfect but it should work.
