Question:

How would i set up a letter so i can send it to my one of my state representatives?

is it like any other letter?? or does it have some special format?

  1. There is no special format required, although typically elected officials in the U.S. are addressed with the title "The Honorable Jane Smith" in the address block.  The salutation is "Dear Senator/Representative Smith" as appropriate.

    If you are expressing a position you wish the legislator to take on a piece of legislation, keep your letter brief and get directly to the point.  Identify the legislation by its Bill or resolution number and, preferably, its title as well.  Demonstrate that you are knowledgable about the bill, state your position on it and explain why you have taken it.

    If you are writing to request the legislator's assistance with a problem you are experiencing with a state agency, it may be preferable to call the legislator's office.  Communications of this nature are usually handled by aides.  If you write it, again be as brief as possible but provide enough detail so that the legislator's aide knows what the problem is.  Provide a phone number so that someone from the legislator's office can contact you if necessary.
