How would i set up an aerial booster?

i have a tv downstairs which has the outside aerial connected to it, i have bought a coax cable which runs from the downstairs tv to the upstairs tv the signal is good but i want it better, where would i put the aerial booster to better the signal?

  1. Put the booster closer to the aerial end than the TV end so that you get a good strong signal all down the cable.

    Beware though that unless the signal is reasonably strong to begin with, you will just amplify the noise as well and it will not improve at all.


  2. The odds are that the coax you bought, off the shelf, is one of these cheapo extension coaxes.

    These cables have a typical loss of 10-15dB, which ain't too clever. Far better to get a piece of low loss coax and terminate it yourself and save all the cost of a "booster" (properly called an aerial pre-amp.).

    TV pre-amps typically provide around 6dB gain, so the low loss will probably outperform that by around 4-6dB.
