Cartography is fairly evident . . . the ability to read and create maps would be of paramount importance as an explorer. Mathematics is closely related to both fields, cartography and astronomy.  A knowledge of astronomy would come in very handy to enable one to determine ones position on earth, lacking modern conveniences such as GPS.
