Question:

How would my organisation benefit from me working from home?

I've got young children, currently work part -time in the office but I'm looking to work one more day a week from home. I need to convince them at work that as much as this would be beneficial to me, they stand to gain as well. Any ideas!

  1. Uhm, how much traveling time would you save? If you are HONESTLY trying to show that they'll benefit, then offer to WORK the time you'd normally travel.

To you is the exact same, to them means you are more productive (if you aren't going to ask to be paid for it, which I somehow doubt)

I can see no other ways that they are going to gain, it fact they'll lose out as in the office there's less distractions, but it also depends on what you do. If your work can be measured,(eg you do 100 at home but only 75 in the office)  then there's no convincing to be done.

It seems to me you want to work from home so you can look after your young children and be paid for it :)

  2. not sure but i would love to work from home but dont no how do get started

  3. hello - without knowing what you do this is difficult, as some roles (executive assistant, secretary, cleaning staff etc.) really cannot work from home and be effective.

if you have a role that can truly be done from home, here's what i might do -

put together a proposal for this -

show them you already have the computer and telephone equipment and it would not cost them money to set you up at home

show them you have child care (receipts or schools) so they don't think you will really be taking care of your children while at home

let them know what you plan to work on the day at home (paperwork?  cold calling?) and that it can be done just as well from home  as from the office.

    good luck

  4. It wouldn't, short answer.

The answer above is a fantastic response to a question along the lines of "how can I show my employer that it would be feasible for me to work from home?"

It does not address how your company would benefit, and that is simply because there actually isn't a benefit to them.  In actual fact there is a monetary cost to them because they would likely be reimbursing your phone bill, internet access, etc.
