I was born in canada, but i am a permanent resident of the US. If my boyfriend and i were to get married, would he automatically be able to move to canada and be a citizen, or would it be the same process as anyone else...or would it be more simple??

how would we go about this?

  1. It takes some time to get citizenship.  You can sponsor him to become a permanent resident of Canada.  You can do this while you are both in the US but then you have to have a job offer, house, rented apartment or something in Canada to prove that you are planning to go live there when he gets his PR.  You could also go to Canada and start the paperwork from there while he stays in the US.

He could also go with you on a visitor visa and stay with you in Canada while you are getting the paperwork done but the problem is that he is not allowed to work and the process can take 6-9 months.  Also if you did that, his status in Canada while you are applying is unclear so he would not be deported but if he had to go to the US he might not be let back in.

Once he gets his PR, he needs to stay in Canada for at least 2 years out of every 5 to keep it.  He has to live in Canada for 3 years to be able to apply for citizenship and processing that takes another year.

  2. It will be the same process for him.If you are living together for a while and can prove it,they will speed it up

  3. He would have to go through the same process as everyone else.  I am a US citizen married to a Canadian citizen.

He would be eligible to apply for PR in Canada with you (his spouse) as his sponsor.  It can take usually 1-2 years.  Yes, he can stay in Canada while he waits but he will not be eligible for work unless he also files for an open work permit.

After 3 years of residency he could apply for Canadian citizenship.  It will take about another year to get it after you apply.
