How would one go about to start learning to play the guitar on their own?

  1. Well...http://www.ultimate-guitar.com has pretty much everything you need to get you started (apart from the guitar and, if electric, pick). It has tutorials (Lessons link on top) forums if you have a question, and best of all, guitar tabs (songs) that once you learn how to read, you can start playing! One thing you should learn is to tune your guitar. There are tuners for your guitar in music centers (stores), usually where you buy your guitar. Don't worry if you don't get the rhythm playing part at first (unless you play the drums or something, then it's no problem at all). Just make sure you press on the strings of the guitar in the correct place and hard enough so that it sounds clear. :) You could also tap your foot (what I usually do) to help get your rhythm right.
