Aaliyah and Aliyah are the Muslim and Hebrew spellings. It means ascending. If the double A's bother you, you can go with Aliyah. I wouldn't go with a phonetic spelling for the name, only because it's an official name. I find it tacky more than creative when some parents choose phonetic spelling for traditional names. Eg. Kimberly vs. Kimberleigh Just my humble opinion since you've asked the public. My name is Maria. Just imagine what a joke it would be if my parents chose to spell it Mahreah. I wouldn't stray too far from the traditional, official spelling.
