This is based on 2 things I read on Y/A-

1) a poster thinks black hyper-sexualized women in videos is the cause of abortions and low number of births in western countries. (i swear!)

Do black women CHOSE to depict themselves as hypersexualized?

2) in regard to p**n, some ppl think women voluntarily do p**n. So do women pose themselves or are they posed?

If women made p**n, how would they depict themselves?

Would they use violence, facial abuse, ugly men? (Not saying all p**n uses that)

The idea of depicting your group rather than having a group depict you for you has a long and contensious history.

In the late 1800s, Symbolist artists depicted women as the Femme Fatale, the destructor of men. In truth, this was during Victorian times and women were very devoted to homelife. When women did depict themselves, they painted home scenes, which reflected reality, not subjective ideas.

***How important is it that groups (women, blacks, asians, etc.) depict themselves?**

  1. As a woman, I have never been turned on by watching the 'action' of the s*x act. I think if women were to depict themselves in p**n it would definitely be more about he process of seduction rather than the act itself. But I think we all know p**n is created by men, for men.

some women feel the need to 'compete' in the 'sexiness' and looks department, with other women, to gain the attention of men. They are not well-rounded and secure enough in other areas of their lives. Or maybe the focus of most of the attention they got from males growing up was based on their appearance rather than their intellect or skills.

The femme fatale was also invented by men, yet another male fantacy.

If women were to depict themselves, they would be more real and less 'symbolic' or sexualised for the benefit of men.

  2. You'd first have to question the internal cohesiveness of those groups - For example, frankly I'd rather be portrayled as a femme fetale than a housewife and preferably as neither. I don't want a women thinking she can portray me better that anyone else just because we share a gender - that's not likely to be true. I might have more in common with a Type B personality man than a Type A personality women (or vice versa).

I think this idea misses the point of individual varitations within these rough groups. I think it's important people are allowed to depict their own groups, but it doesn't mean they should feel like they have too - art is not always a reflection of life, anyway.

  3. If your income came from making film, how would you depict yourself?

  4. There are an awfully large group of women that allow themselves to be objectified. There is a very fine line between art and pornography...

Personally, I feel violated as a woman and it angers me that with the excessive amount of the media exposure OF promiscuity and sexuality, we have an increasingly large number of LITTLE GIRLS that think that their sexuality is the most important part of their existence...

Sadly enough, I have to agree with the notion that in reality SOME women choose to be viewed as hyper-sexual...it's a humongous cycle that will probably never be broken, and that will probably continue to contribute to the breakdown of human morals and the sacredness of family and the virtue of being a LADY...  :0(

  5. You get films that show strong independent women (Aliens, Decent) and films that show them as s*x objects (p**n). So they are depicted in all ways, just depends which one you want to watch.
