  1. Use a sodium hydroxide based relaxer (the kind that is used for african american hair).  Unplug your flat iron and while it is warm use a towel with some relaxer on it and rub the flat iron.  It will come right off.  Then use a damp clean towel to clean any excess relaxer from the flat iron.  You can use it to clean curling irons and you can coat your brushes in and rinse them off to clean the gunk out.  Be careful not to get in on your skin it can burn.

  2. ALWAYS make sure that before cleaning your hair straightener that it is turned off and cool.

With a soft, dry, clean cloth gently wipe down the plates of your flat iron. Never use anything sharp to clean the edges of the plates as this will scratch the plates. If there is build up in the creases cover your fingernail with the cloth or use a dry cotton swab to get into the smaller sections of the iron.

It may take a couple of goes to get any residue off but once you have cleaned them fully, keep on to of it once a week.

    Good Luck
