How would you define Indie Rock?

I know bands... But how would you like describe the sound??

indie= independent. Anything with an independent label, means that they are strictly independent, only one, no big corporation telling them how to sing or what to sound like for other people. They simply stick to the music they'd like. Most are d.i.y attitude, they dont depend on any big corporations. Outcome is great music bc they sing what they feel, and most are anti corp.

I think of softer rock with more poetic lyrics and a fair amount of acoustic guitar with various weird instruments in place of an ordinary drum set (like array mbiras, bongos, etc.).

I know indie can mean a lot of things but that's what comes to my mind.

I think of my sisters annoying college buddies calling themselves " indie snobs"

In my opinion, any music would be classified as Indie if the record label they signed with were independent
