That is a very broad question. Advertising is announcing to the world that you have a product or service to offer, for sale, for free, whatever. Online is simply using internet based methods to do said advertising.  Now, if you are asking how to do said advertising, the answers are a bit more detailed.  Here are a few ways:

Internet forums - can't advertise overtly, but can have  a signature file with links.

blogs - create your own, comment on others, again, no direct advertising, but become known as an expert in whatever you are sharing, will draw people to you and your business

articles Marketing - write informative articles and get them published online in places like ezine articles.

Purchase leads -  lots of vendors out there. Can be expensive, but it works

Purchase ad space in places like Google Adsense, or others. Purchase ad space on high traffic websites.

Advertising is impersonal communications.  Internet would just be the medium.
