How would you describe an Oxford accent?

I don't think I'm common and I'm not posh. I try to speak properly as it's important for studying law. I have never really thought about my accent really, as I just think of it as south England, but I was brought up in Oxford and then I lived near London for a while and now in Wiltshire. I was talking to somebody the other day from Wiltshire and they said they can tell I come from Oxford because of my accent. As I'm so used to an Oxford accent, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Were they being nice or insulting me? They speak properly so I'm not sure if they were trying to say I don't. How would you describe an Oxford accent? I mean the native accent, not the students.

I don't think I want to sound really posh, as I think a bit of an accent is more interesting.

  1. Stephen Fry?

  2. I think while your studying law maybe you should realise that not all law graduates have an Oxford accent and are not in the slightest bit common. Anyone can speak properly and be posh, but that doesn't mean they have to speak with a southern accent, that is just a stereotype for TV.

Kavanagh spoke well, but there was no getting away from that Manchester accent.
