  1. a great crowd

  2. I would describe them as so many acres of crop land, so many acres of watershed, so many acres of timber land, so many acres of housing, so many acres of infrastructure, so many tons of sewage, so many cubic feet of methane and carbon dioxide, etc.

I'm sorry I can't give you the numbers but you have stimulated my interest in finding those.  I do know that in the US, we averaged twenty acres of arable land per person, but that's dropping with the population growth.  In impoverished countries they average about five acres per person.

Somewhere there is a minimum acceptable human habitat.  It looks like it's somewhere between five and twenty acres.  I would rough guess at ten acres per person.  If we assume only half of those are actually used, we could describe fifty million people as equivalent to at least 250 million acres of land taken from the wilderness, minus the watershed and the timberland.  Those will still be at least partially useful to other species.

Don't trust that number, it's just an example of what you could use.  I don't know what is the actual minimum acreage needed.  I'm sure it depends very much on the quality of the land.

  3. china

  4. a huge population
