How would you graphically present purpose in a drawing as explained in existentialism? Such as a dove representing peace or say a dice representing chance; what would symbolize purpose? A simple picture would be best. i.e. a dice or a dove.

  1. Purpose = motivation, reason, aim, objective, goal, target  . . . aspiration

Me, personally, I would paint a climber's-eye-view of one of the world's great mountains.  That was the purpose that changed my life, and the reason I am an artist now.  And I guess that is why I continue to paint mountains.  Not the pretty ones in Bob Ross paintings, but the real deals from up close . . . from base camp.

The Enigma song "Out From the Deep" was my theme song while I was training . . . it felt like my spirit felt while becoming a new, strong, healthy athlete after a sedentary life as an average woman:

"We came out from the deep

To learn to love, to learn how to live

We came out from the deep

To avoid the mistake we made

That's why we are here !

    .

We came out from the deep

To help and understand, but not to kill

It takes many lives till we succeed

To clear the debts of many hundreds years

    That's why we are here ! "

I memorized that song, that purposeful song . . .  and it played over and over in my head during those long hours trudging up the glacier.

Existentialism is a philosophical movement which posits that individuals create the meaning and essence of their lives, as opposed to it being created for them by deities or authorities or defined for them by philosophical or theological doctrines.

Symbolism was largely a reaction against Naturalism and Realism, anti-idealistic movements which attempted to capture reality in its gritty particularity, and to elevate the humble and the ordinary over the ideal. These movements invited a reaction in favour of spirituality, the imagination, and dreams; the path to Symbolism begins with that reaction.[1] Some writers, such as Joris-Karl Huysmans, began as naturalists before moving in the direction of Symbolism; for Huysmans, this change reflected his awakening interest in religion and spirituality.

In literature, the movement has its roots in Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil, 1857) by Charles Baudelaire. The aesthetic was developed by Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine during the 1860s and '70s. In the 1880s, the esthetic was articulated through a series of manifestoes and attracted a generation of writers. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, which Baudelaire greatly admired and translated into French, were a significant influence and the source of many stock tropes and images.

Distinct from the movement in literature, Symbolism in art represents an outgrowth of the darker, gothic, side of Romanticism; but where Romanticism was impetuous and rebellious, Symbolist art was static and hieratic.
