I'm taking a Math Placement test for junior high. And I forgot the steps to figuring out this problem. Here it is: 4/5x + 3/10 = 9/10

By the way x is the variable. Please tell me step by step and please give me the answer. It's just a sample problem.

  1. I'm going to assume the first term is (4/5)*x and not 4/(5x)

    First, multiply all terms by 10 to get rid of the fractions.

    10*(4/5)*x+10*(3/10)=10*(9/10)

    Remember, 10*(4/5) is 8.  The other fractions the 10's on the bottom cancel out with the 10 we mulitplied by

    8x+3=9

    Subtract 3 from both sides

    8x=6

    Divide both sides by 8

    x=6/8

    Write your answer in lowest terms

    x=3/4

    If, on the other hand, it really is 4/(5x), here's the other solution:

    4/(5x)+3/10=9/10

    Subtract 3/10 from both sides

    4/(5x)=9/10-3/10

    4/(5x)=6/10

    Cross multiply.  Take the top of the left times the bottom of the right and set it equal to the bottom of the left times the top of the right.

    4*10=6*5x

    40=30x

    x=40/30

    x=4/3

  2. Wow, I just finished algebra 1 in 9th gr. Im pretty sure you have to get the x by itself. Thats what I think. Been awhile since ive done that stuff.

  3. x= 3/4
