How would you find a birth parent with these circumstances?

My Dad was born in 1949 and was given up for adoption. However the adoption was not legal and there was no paper work. The only think my Dad was ever told is that His mother had many children and that she had to give him up before her husband came home. (assuming he was not the husband's child) As he understands it he was born in Tennessee and his adoptive mother drove up from Jacksonville, FL to TN to get him. The hospital that he was born in burnt down so as we understand it there were no records of his birth. When my Dad started school he was almost taken away because of there being no documentation. They finally went ahead and issued him a birth certificate based off of information that his adopted mother gave them... so it was not his true information. With all this being said.... Is there a way to find out who is mother was and the rest of his siblings???

  1. i would look up black market adoption searches on the net. There are ways, its possible. don't ever give up hope. You may want to try and find a way to trace the births of his other siblings, if you could link them to one woman, since he has several you MAY be able to narrow it down to a few women. All hospital records are kept somewhere, even after fires, thats a cheap shot that adoptees are told OFTEN. too OFTEN.

  2. Doubtful, unless the birth mom comes forward with information.

  3. Where is his mother now?  Can she give you any information about the adoption?  How hard it must be to wonder where you come from.  I am so sorry for your dad.  I hope he gets all his questions answered soon.

  4. can the adoptive mother give some information? If she's still alive then she can tell you who's your dad's biological mother. If she's dead. then somebody in her family has to know how she got a hold of your dad, how she met your dad's biological mother etc, etc, etc.

    Good luck, even though I don't think that luck exists and God is the only one that can help you, you will need luck to find the needle in the hay stack.

  5. If his siblings were old enough to understand, there is a possibility that they will/are looking for him.

    Here are some sites to look into regarding black market adoptions.  Most black market adoptions are considered for profit but his falls under the same category since there are no records.

    Since you know what hospital, you must know what town he was born in.  Request that the newspaper print an article regarding his situation, request that a photo be published with it to help with identifying him.  The other children may have been told that he died during child birth or they may not have been aware.

    Good luck in your search.

  6. Seriously doubtful. As you point out there are no official records to fall back on. Best you can do is find some newsgroups in the Tennessee city and post the story there hoping it sounds famliar to someone.

    <edit>

    Oh... birth records aren't kept at the hospital (though they keep a copy). Birth records are filed with the county.

  7. Wtih this scenario, the information that you are seeking will definitely be hard to find but don't give up hope.  With the internet you never know what you will find.  I would start with vital records in Tennessee.  I would either ask for a copy of the birth certificate (depending upon the information I had) or say that I am doing a genealogy search (if you have less information (i.e., only the approximate date of birth, approximate ages of siblings, name of the hospital, etc.).  I say approximate date of birth because sometimes the date of birth is incorrect.  I would also post my information online at some adoption forum websites.  In addition, I would see if Yahoo!, Google, etc., has a group specifically for adoptees and/or birthparents and/or siblings from TN searching for one another.   Good Luck!

    I also wanted to add that if there is no record of the adoption, the more likely you will be able to get an original birth certificate with the parents or at least the mother's name on it.

  8. If his siblings have heard about him and have chosen to search for him, then it is possible. Remember, they may not have all the information either.  He should list what he knows with adoption search registries including one specific for FL.

    Devin's Mom has some really good advice!  I like the angle with the newspaper.

  9. on here sometimes you can ask help from a geneologist right here on line. sometimes they can help although they dont' liek to if alive. there is palce to leave messages on cousinconnect.com and its free. go back every now and then and if you know where he was at go to neighbors around the area and find out if they remeber anything sometimes they do and you would be surprized.
