I have to represent my area (Northwest Ohio) for an International Youth Representatives conference soon.

I obviously can't say that we are dropouts who party and do meth or anything... but I want to know your honest opinions.

  1. It seems some are really spoiled but I have to say the ones I know best are very good people.

  2. I'm not a youth anymore, but I have a 16 year old sister. It seems that the youth of today are by and large hard workers who are nonetheless criticised harshly. Honestly, they aren't into much worse than I was into, or what my parents, or their parents, were into. My generation was the first to grow up with powerful computers, and personal computers. Those growing up today are experiencing the fusion of technology and full-blown globalization. Their biggest influences, their parents, are generally more conservative culturally, as they weren't exposed to the global environment to the same degree as these kids. Their second greatest influence, their peers, are heading full speed ahead into the global communication age, with both positive and negative results.

Like it or not, what these kids really, really need is some solid ground to stand on, culturally. Teenagers generally have identity issues, and now they get to talk to people around the world effortlessly. They also need what kids have always need, guidance from their elders. Online predators are one great example of how adults, who are generally a bit more experienced and wiser, can protect their kids from negative influences, even if they don't understand what technology involved. Adults today need to pass on responsible behavior.

  3. I can't think of one single solitary thing good to say about the spoiled rotten brats of today's generation, they're mean hateful and have little or no respect for other people, not to mention selfish! You have a huge problem to solve making today's youth look good, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes on this one.

  4. The youth of today are no different than the youth of any other time period.  Every older generation always has something to say negative about the current generation.  It will be the same way when you are older and you and your friends are evaluating the younger generation.

  5. Look at it this way. The low profile US kids are still well-mannered, hard-working, kind and loving - all the good things we wanted our children to be as adults. Sure they experiment, they stumble, they learn. They're probably the majority.

And then there are the others. Ill-mannered, bullies, thugs, and dead-end criminal euro-trashy wannabes.

  6. **** *** ****!!!

oh, and you forgot to mention gang violence spreading from Detroit area.

  7. I see the youth of today at the end of a transition.  We have had transitions before in history.  There was even one about the time grunge made its debut.  This one has to do with technology.  We have been in a transition for more and more technology and it moves at a faster pace all the time.  Your generation is use to this change and is better at adapting to the changes as it comes in which are rapidly increasing.

You are amoung the first and second generation that was "cared for" by their parents.  It's not that parents didn't care about their kids of previous generations.  They did.  But I remember being left in the car while my parents went in to do their shopping.  That was not very common in your generation.  Parents held their children's hands through the store and parking lots.  They spent more fun time with their kids, sometimes just for safety's sake.  Your world hasn't been as safe as generations past (or your parents weren't as naive).  You needed your parents to be that way.

However, you have also been catered to by this technology and your parents.  In terms of how older generations see it, your generation has been handed a candy-coated, commercialized world.  It is a world of excess in every avenue.  But with greater excess can come greater falls.  You mentioned the dropouts and meth.  These are just a couple of the falls that I'm talking about.

People of older generations are very interested to see how your generation is going to handle these things when you are on your own.  How will the 'loss of innocence' effect your generation?

Something else that I see in your generation is environmental awareness.  This is something that seems to have grown with each generation.  Yours is probably the closest to getting it right thus far.  You, as a generation, are more aware of it but are more willing to make the sacrifices to save it.  So, although you don't have a firm understanding of some of lifes pitfalls, you have a better understanding of others.

Your world is smaller than that of previous generations.  This, in itself, has its problems and its benefits too.

That is all that I can think of at the moment, but hopefully it will get your creative juices flowing...even if you agree or don't agree with me.

  8. They are good at not wasting mental and emotional energy. They seem to be able to focus on the task at hand without a lot of needless busy work or emotion. Its difficult to explain. They seem to be bright and helpful and caring without overdoing it mentally or psychologically. They learn, and practice, only what is specifically needed to get them through their responsibilities of the day. This is a good thing. It saves much needed mental and psychic energy. This type of energy cannot easily be refueled. It must be conserved. I will sum up by saying this. Why use a paper and pencil to workout a long, boring math problem, when you can simply use a calculator and maybe some computer software. This makes them inherently less interpersonal and social, but I really believe that is a learned trait of our society. They are adjusting well to the evolution of their culture. This may be intimidating to some who do not understand the need for change in our world.

  9. They are the My-Space, You-Tube & Yahoo-Answers generation. They live among us, but not with us.

    They have their Odd Cyberworld.

  10. Mindless morons.

  11. Well... U ask for it. The youth of today for the most part either want to criticize or develop a belief system that is actually a total waste of time. They feel Superior yet accomplish little. Just like i was when i was a kid. Some things never change. So grow up.

  12. I would focus on

    - confused

    - overwhelmed

    - bombarded with so much information/changes

    - very difficult times with very little hope

I would not like to be young today.

But I must hope that the youth of today

will rise to the occasion eventually and

will be wiser than we have been as adults.

Let us hope so, as we, adults, have made

a mess of things, haven´t we - and then again,

we are so fast in criticizing, alas, what to we do to

    help them.  Not much...

  13. disgusting, careless,  nightmare
