Hey guys. Uhm i want to get into BMX but i dont know how. I was wondering if BMX is offered in high schools but apparently my hs, GHS, doesnt have BMX. Is BMX like something you sign up for like a team or some sort of club you look for in your region and you just register and stuff? Im a freshmen at GHS, glendale CA and i really want to find out how i can get myself in BMX.

THANKS.

  1. What I found, I don't run bmx... I run a 27 speed full suspension offroad rig... but the local bmx dirt track usually has a few riders, go there a couple of times and wait for some competietors to be practicing talk to them, (they always wear full face helmets, they will have pads on, they will have a van or cheap truck there and sometimes a little tent) these people have the best information, some will let you train with them if you ask

  2. If you are interested in BMX racing then look at either the ABA and/or NBL websites to find your local tracks - you can go there to register, practice and race.  You need a bike and clothing.  Start cheap until you get good enough to appreciate a better bike.  A good beginner bike is around $500 - or you can find one on craigslist for $200-300.  You can pick up a Fly, Giro, 661, THE or similar full face helmet for $100-200.  Then you need long pants and long sleeved shirt - wear jeans or buy a kit for $150.  Getting on a team usually comes as after you begin riding.  It's a lot of fun and it won't cost you an arm and a leg but you can and will get hurt from time to time - like most sports :-)

  3. Depends on what kind of bmx you want to do. Racing or Freestyle ?

I can help you with racing but no so much the freestyle. For racing,

pretty much just get a really good bike, my boyfriends bike all

together costs over $2000, so they can be pretty expensive but

you need top of the line equipment to perform well. After you get

your bike, your need your gear. You have to have a full face helmet,

pants and a long sleeve shirt. The helmet can be pretty pricy too,

again my boyfriends was over $300. You can wear just normal pants

and a long sleeve shirt or buy actual race pants and a jersey from a

bike company which is much better and protects you better as far

as the pants go. Also, you need shoes that will clip into your pedals,

their called clipless shoes. After you get all your stuff together and

figure out exactly what you need/have. Sign up for an NBL membership.

You live in California so theres deffinately tracks around there.

Go to NBL.com that will tell you where theres a track near you

and also how to start racing. Pretty much thats its. It dosent seem

like much but trust me its a lot and a lot of hardwork goes into this

sport. As far as gear and bike equipment goes try danscomp.com

search J&R bike company on google or something to get the exact

site because I forgot it but they have good racing stuff as well. Pretty

much thats the basics. Hope this was the sport you were talking

about or I wrote all this for nothing. lol =) Get into the sport though,

    its amazing.

  4. Go to a local bike shop or extreme sports shop and ask them about different bikes they have and then ask them where they ride and who they ride with. Go to different skate and bike parks and mingle with different riders and learn about the sport. There usually aren't any teams or anything like that in high school but that would be the best way to approach the sport. I used to ride in middle and high school(about 4 years ago) and me and friends would go and build dirt jumps behind parks or in the fields so also look around your school to see who rides. Good luck!
