How would you get into designing Weapons?

Weapons such as guns. I am pretty sure it would be engineering but what type and how would you get a job doing this?

Here is an idea for a backyard weapons project.

Dig a 6 ft deep hole. Fill it with explosives. On top of the explosives place a 100 pound acme weight.

Finally you  need to wire a 50 ft fuse to the explosive pit. When ignited the explosion would hurl the acme weight into the air and potentially land on someone. Effective weapon or not?

Gun smithing is more a trade, not an engineering role. The best way to get into this job would be to attempt to get a job at a small arms factory or an apprenticeship with a gunsmith.

Modern weapon systems draw more heavily upon higher engineering concepts, such as electrical, mechanical and computer systems. Look up any local defence contractors in your area to see what projects they are working on and what types of engineering graduates they are hiring.
