How would you go about asking a veterinary clinic if you can volunteer/work there?

I'm 19 and considering becoming a vet, so i want to be around an actual vet to see what its like. How would i do this? Ask the person at the receptionist desk? or ask to speak to the actual vet?

im kind of nervous so i want to know what to say.....?

Just go in and ask.  Tell them about your consideration of veterinary medicine and just let things take their course.

My brother in law is a vet, from time to time, kids ask if they can shadow him in the clinic to see if they are intrested.  You can leave a message with the receptionist and see what their policy is.  Sometimes the receptionist will have the answer, and sometimes she will need to speak to the vet and get the answer, or times when you should stop by.
