Like say for junior league, or Auskick... I'm a 14 yr old girl by the way :p

would that make a difference??

Cause like you only seem to see male umpires. I think it would be cool to see a female out there :p

any tips?

thanks :]

  1. Contact your local football league. EDFL, RDJFL, depends what area you live in.

It doesn't matter if you're a girl. There is plenty of female umpires out there in the junior leagues, so don't worry about that.

I'm not sure about how old you have to be though.

aflumpire might have more information for you.

  2. go and watch a local game, go up to the umps b4 the game and tell them you are interested, first step.

then you will probably do some boundary umpiring, then once you learn the rules properly and where to run in games etc, you got crack a game, we have a few boundary umps in the country but only seen one girl in the juniors, she was ok, i was coaching a side and she did quite well, i didnt notice her, so that's doing well in my opinion.

even contact the afl and they will steer you in the right direction

    good luck

  3. ok, look at my name......now you know who you are talking to!

(THIS IS A VERY LONG ANSWER (longest answer I have made) , BUT I HOPE THIS IS VERY USEFUL TO YOU!)

I myself umpire Juniors up here on the Sunshine Coast. In our ranks, there is 20 or so of us and there is one girl climbing up our ranks as well.

What you need to do is go to a local junior game and watch it. While you may have done that thousands of times before, go and watch and think about if you really want to be umpiring that game.

Then talk to your old folks. They will have to drive you to training every week and to your game(s) every weekend. There is a lot of commitment invovled.

Then talk to your local umpiring association. If you dont know for how to contact them, then contact your local AFL association; they should be able to give you a contact. They will then invite you to training and you will be introduced.

(if your still reading then you must be very interested as it is a VERY long road just to get started)

Now they will enroll you into a Basic Umpires Course where you will get your 'Level 0' certificate. That means that you can now umpire up to under 14 matches but they dont have to give you under 14....under 14 would be the limit.

Then you get your Green Shirt. a green shirt indicates that you are a first year umpire.

Then your first game!!! Dont worry, before you umpire, they will make sure that you are fit enough for it...even though it might just be an under 10's game.

You dont go out alone at all while you are a green shirt. for most of the year, you will go out with a ceritified Mentor who will help you out in any difficulty. Then its just routine of attending training and getting to your games at a minimum of 30 mins before kick off.

The most important quality you need is a THICK SKIN! trust me. you probobly wont get it from say under 10's but if you go for a couple of years and get to say under 14 level, the players start critisizing you and the parents will get on your back.

But enjoy it. YOu do get paid for it. I get paid $45 for doing under 16's and you do meet new friends. There are many more positives then negitives. We all make bad calls and you will make a lot of sh*t decisions but thats how it is....its all a part of learning.

good luck and if you want any more information (in more detail) then give me an e-mail through my profile page!

  4. There is a female goal umpire in the AFL, I have seen her at a couple of matches.

Try this link & good luck :)

  5. Start like I did in hockey.  Turn up at a game ... any game (except maybe Port v Geelong in the GF - I mean junior footy).  Ask if you can work as a goal umpire or boundary rider.  Watch what the umps do and get a thorough understanding of the rules.  Then talk to those guys about your ambition.

There are more and more female umps out there.  Most of them are pretty good.
