So, I'm doing a assignment for Drivers Ed and, we need to learn how to handle a sideways skid. We're supposed to ask fifteen experienced and fifteen non experienced drivers what they would do in the situation.

If your 14/15 you're unexperienced.

If your 16+ you're considered experienced in this assignment.

Please specify if you are experienced or non.

  1. Experienced driver.  I point my front wheels so they're aiming the same way the car is actually moving.  So if my car is all cattywumpus to the left, I'll spin the wheel to the right.

See, if your front wheels are at a different angle than the car is moving, they won't grab very well, they'll just keep skidding.  Once you line em up, they'll grab, you'll get steering back (kinda) and you can pull out of the skid.

Steer into the skid.    Yeah,  it's hard to comprehend,   so to simplify it,   steer whichever way you need to keep the car pointed the way you want to go.

If  the back of the car is going left,  you will be turning the wheel left,   if right,  then right.

Depends on whether it's a FWD or RWD car.

If it's a FWD, you can *usually* accelerate out of it.

If it's a RWD, you can use good throttle control and a bit of counter-steer, then slowly come off the throttle & straighten the wheel to grip up.

But really, it all depends on other factors such as angle and speed and proximity of other road users, among other things.

  4. Experienced driver:

I would steer into the direction of the skid the get the front wheels straight again.  I would also take my foot off the gas and lightly apply the brakes.  If the car does not have anti-lock brakes, I would lightly pump the brakes.  if the car has anti-lock I would not pump the brakes.

This would give me more control over the car.

Then I would hang on and rid it out until i got the car to stop.

  5. Experienced Driver.

You will turn against the skid.  This will hopefully slow the skid of turn the skid back to straight.  It could possibly make the skid go in the other direction.  If that happens just turn in to the other skid.  Hope you get an A...
