How would you know if you are an alto, mezzo-soprano, or a soprano? Also, what songs would be good for me?

So I was singing and I was wondering what songs are better for my voice. It would pretty much depend on if you're an alto, mezzo-soprano, or a soprano, right? So I just want to know. For me, I can sing from the F or G below middle C up to the G or A after the C after middle C.

  1. It depends on alot of things.

just from that description, i would say you are a mezzo.

now, how do you sound on the notes?

if you dont sound very good on the lower range, (IE your tone is not as good, it sounds strained)

then you are a soprano. I know many sopranos that can hit the lower notes, but they dont sound as good on them.

If you dont sound very good on the upper notes, (IE tone = sharp / flat, you have to work extreamly hard to get it out) i would say you are a mezzo. a mezzo tends to not go as high as a soprano, and not as low as an alto, contrary to the belief that they are both.

the reason i wouldnt call you an alto, is because I am a true alto, and while i can  get up to a B flat above where you can get up to i do not sound good on it, and I can go down to a

D flat and C below you.

and then again, you could be one of those rare people who actually can sound good on both levels. if so, good for you, you can sing anything you please.

but you really need a vocal coach who can actually listen to you and judge where you are.

    Hope that helped!
