Mix something and put it on a cd.  Make fifty and give/send them to the manager of the venues you want to play in.  Get a professional looking letter introducing yourself and what you do, and put this with the cd.  If you are good enough and they like your sound you will get a gig.  Get posters made up for the gig and give them to the venue.  Make sure they are glossy and in color.  Contact the gig guides and underground newspapers and put your dates in, often its free.  Put posters up at uni's.
