  1. Barcelona has a lot to see, especially if you enjoy shopping and looking at modern architecture. But if it's beaches, relaxation, traditional things and old buildings you are looking for then it's not the right place. It's a very busy and modern city and the only beaches are artificial ones (unless you travel further afield). Personally there are nicer and more scenic cities, including Madrid if it's specifically Spain you want to go to.

If its affordable you want why not consider what some still call 'eastern europe'? Prague or Budapest maybe?

  2. Barcelona is one of my favorite cities. You can't  be bored there,  to much to see. Barcelona is not a cheap place, but you can use your money wisely to stay in the city. I will recommended to look for a 3 star hotel near plaza Cataluña, last year I stay at the Gravina H-10 and is good for the price ( ask for the bigger room at the back of the building and not at the smaller ones). Barcelona is walkable city and you reach a lot of important places by foot, like walking in La Rambla, Paseo de Gracia and the Barrio Gotico. You must see the Gaudy's buildings of la Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and the Park Guel. Eating can be expensive I suggest to look for pastries stores where you can buy sandwiches to eat rapidly or carry on. If you want and all around view of the city try the touristic bus in from of El Corte Ingles in Plaza Cataluña. The bus stop regularly at the principal attractions and historical places. You can also use the metro system, look for the day or week especial rates.

    Enjoy the City!

  3. Barcelona is a neat place... lots of good restaurants and you can walk around the city pretty easily...  There is lots to see and do and don't miss the Columbus stuff on the waterfront  Pricewise, I don't seem to remember it being any more expensive then most other places in Spain outside of Madrid.

  4. If you want to save money on hotel stay in Tarragona. It's an hour south of Barcelona by train. A good day excursion from the city is Montserrat, which is also easy to get to by train.

  5. Barcelona is a nice city, but it is one of the more expensive cities in Spain.  Madrid is about the same price, but is much more scenic, historic, and has a better blend of culture & nightlife.

Have you thought about Sevilla? It is an interesting historical city.  It is cheaper and there are many interesting cities that are within a short distance from it--Granada, Cordoba, Morocco etc.
