Question:

How would you rather pronounce this name: Ayeh? ?

My name is Ayeh. It's an Arabic name and is therefore difficult to pronounce. During my high school years, I told people to call me Eye-ya or I-ya. Several of my classmates as well as my teachers had difficulty pronouncing it.

I'm starting college on Monday and was wondering if I should just tell my professors to call me A-ya. As in the letter A then ya. Not yeah.

Advice? Opinions?

  1. I would pronounce it Eye-ah or Eye-ya.  I think it's a very pretty name.  That's too bad that your teachers and classmates had trouble with it, but I would not change the proununciation of your name just because others cannot remember it.

  2. Hi there Ayeh, I think you have a very interesting name. I would like to know what it means. I don't think I - ya is hard to pronounce, maybe hard to read. If that is your name and that is how your parents pronounced it, and you like it, then if you keep correcting people they will get it. I do like your name pronounced both ways. Energetically speaking it should be pronounced the way it is meant to be.

I have a daughter named Taya, pronounced Tay-ya, but for some reason when people see it written they call her Ti-ya. Believe it or not I also have a step daughter named Teja, pronounced the same as my daughters name. What are the chances?

Good luck, I hope that helps.

  3. A - ya that looks like the way that i would pronounce it

  4. Honestly, it is your name and you can have it pronounced anyway you like it. But i would say A-ya if you concerned with it.

  5. humm a-lea-h maby you should say it is _name____  but call me ________

you could have a nick name like myah or somthing!

oh ya and i love your name!

  6. hah i was going to say youd say it like eye-ya .  i think its a good name and so what if you have to tell people how to pronounce it. i have a friend who did that, but the name she went by was closer in spelling than pronunciation, and i think her real name is much prettier.  our teacher got so confused about this lol.  just explain how your name is prononced

  7. Well, if your name isn't Aya then I wouldn't go that route. Maybe they will do better there than in your old high school.

  8. When I first seen your name that's how I pronounced it..A ya..then I got to looking at it and I can tell that's not how you would pronounce it..if the other way isn't working and it really bothers you go with A ya..it still sounds beautiful.or if your middle name isn't complicated and you like it you could go by that. I just had another idea have you tried Ah yey! Just ideas! Hope that helps!

  9. Whichever name you will be comfortable with, is the name you should go by? A-YA is pretty, but A-yeh, is pretty too! Maybe you could by your middle name? Or go by your First initial & your middle initials? Would that be okay? Would they be able to pronounce your middle name?Or you yourself could pick a nickname you want other people to call you, like:[what do you like? Do you collect anything?] such as:Che'[which means friend](CH-A), but its up to you, [I-ya told you so]? maybe something like that? Maybe, some funny name that your friends can say(with no disrespect to you or your name)! You could go by the kind of car you drive?Like Dodge Ram? Sir, its fully up to you, but I wouldn't see anything wrong with you picking a name you like and your friends & teachers would be able to pronounce?

  10. My friend is Arabic, and his cousin's name is your name. I think it's a really pretty name. If you're more comfortable using the pronunciation "Aya", you should definitely tell your professors. Good luck!
