How would you reduce your VIRTUAL water consumption?

Virtual water consumption refers to your indirect water consumption.

For example:

1 apple takes 70 litres of water to produce

1 glass of mild takes 200 litres to produce

A pair of jeans costs 10,850 litres to produce!

How would you personally reduce this virtual water consumption? Build a veggie garden? Wear used clothes?

  1. Hmmm..

not sure.. never thought of it that way. I personally want to move out to the country whenever I get the chance and start my own farm. Just for me and my family. Not for mass production.

I want to go back to the old days where people had to ride horses to get around, but at the same time I want electricity. Maybe make my own hydroelectric power? Not sure. I'd have to do some research.

We could always go back without cars and fast foods, and just live like they used to. Without speeding up the end of the Earth. I think it would work, it would probably take some adjusting to, but we could stop worrying about wasting tax dollars on people who won't stop having kids, some of my family is part of that problem. Life would be much harder the more children you had close together.

But at the same time others could argue that getting rid of everything we've made could cause us to pollute the earth even more. IDK, I'd like it to work but I highly doubt it ever will.

    Good question though.

  2. Continue to plant and grow vegetables that don't take a lot of water for proper growth.

I, as well as many where I live, still ride our horses to town.  In the winter, you take about 2/3's the trips to town you would in the spring and fall....(summer can, at times be too hot also), but you learn that you really don't "have" to have _______ to make dinner..you can make due with what you have.  I also ride her to work...since I work at my vet's....I've got it made. *winks*

I do wash my clothes..but I line dry.  I realize that its not that big of a save...but every bit helps.

I haven't gotten brave enough to try making my own juices and such, but I've begun reading more on it....learning.  My neighbor to the left does it and swears by it.

Honestly, I look for ways every time I think about doing something....as well as how I can reduce the amount of garbage I produce, how much more I can recycle and how to do so  and do my best to save money every time I can as well.

Its sad, but a true reality that we have done severe damage to the planet we live upon. Nothing lasts forever....

Great question....now you've got me thinking even harder on it.

  3. Perhaps the solution is to heat the earth so we get lots more rain.

  4. I would eliminate the use of ethanol.  It takes 1700 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of ethanol.
