The english language tell us to use the word (an) before a word that starts with a vowel.

Example: I would like an apple.

My question is what would you put before the word (unit)?

The word (an) does not sound correct. Is it?

  1. a sounds right =]

  2. You would say "A UNIT"

  3. If the vowel sound of the next word is pronounced like a word starting with the letter "Y" (you-nit) then you use the word "a" instead of "an", the same as before the words universe and united.  Ex:  In a universe as diverse as ours, a united front is the only way to find peace. Hope this helps you :)

  4. You are right. You wouldn't say an unit. You would say, "I need a unit of blood" for example.

  5. Rather than saying to put 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel, it's probably wiser to say put 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel sound.  Unit does not begin with a vowel sound.
