  1. Ditto for what everyone else has said, plus I'd add:

    Qu’est-ce que c’est ça ?

    or

    Qu’est-ce que c’est que ça ?

Many "play with word" expressions are not directly translatable, so approximate expressions are used.

  2. Bonjour !

'what the' could be the beginning of a question but you would need the auxiliairy : to be : what's the....... ?

and you would say : 'qu'est-ce que'..... or  'comment', ou 'quel' depending on the question...

or perhaps you meant : what then ? (forgot the n at the end of the ???  )

in that case, you would say, : 'et alors' ?  or et   'après' ?

    Bonne chance !

  3. "Quoi?!"

    Pronounced like "Kwah?"

    It's just "What?!"

But the direct translation for "What the?" in French wouldn't make sense.

  4. You wouldn't. It would have no meaning.

If you mean to ask what the equivalent is for a phrase like "What the h**l is this?" then the phrase would be "Diable, qu'est-ce que c'est?"
