Liquid water (H2O(l)) + iron filings (Fe(s)) + sodium chloride dissolved in water (NaCl(aq)) + beach sand grains (SiO2(s))?

  1. Start by removing the iron filings with a magnet.  Most (I'd never say all) ferrous (iron-containing) metals are magnetic, so that will remove all the iron.  Then pour the water/salt/sand mixture through a sieve to remove the sand.  This will leave you with a water/salt mixture that you can put in a container and begin to heat.  The water will evaporate off, so you'll have to catch it if you're concerned with keeping it, leaving just the salt.  :-)


  2. remove the frin with a magnet, filter the sand out, then distill the water leaving he salt behind  

  3. Use a magnet to collect the iron filings, filter out the sand grains with basic filter paper, then evaporate the water by heating the solution. Use a distillation apparatus so the water is collected instead of just evaporating. The sodium chloride will be left in the flask.
