He can hold a racquet, has so-so hand-eye coordination but hates following directions.

  1. Uh, you're stupid for even thinking about it.

  2. at that age you should just let him feel out the game and have fun. Technique will develop soon after. Maybe lessons where he plays with other kids his age will help. Just keep practicing hitting the ball and allow him to develop his own pacing with the game.

  3. Buy some of the oversized foam balls and the smallest racquet possible and just hit back and forth -- the balls don't bounce as much or move as fast. This is the kind of ball they are using with Quick Start tennis.  Balls are: Gamma Revolution Foam tennis balls. You can get them at www.atssports.com. Tennis-Warehouse likely sells them as well. After a while you can hit over a net. Have fun. You will like it too.

  4. Put a racket in their hand and some balls on the court.  If they like it, you'll know.  I mean, really, they're 3 1/2 years old.

  5. There is a "Gamma First Set" kit that comes with a mini-tennis net along with foam balls and racquets.   I would get that for him.  Just make it fun for him.   "Feed" him balls, like batting practice.    Play catch with him.  And play "golf" with the racquet and tennis balls.  There tennis classes for tots, but I think they start kids at 5 or six.  Making tennis fun for the kids is very important.  Good luck!
