How would you symbolize...?

I have an assignment to create a visual piece that represents how in order to feel and recognize love, you must know how it feels to be hurt by others.

I'll be putting the idea into either a painting, collage, sketch, etc.

I've been trying to think of an idea all weekend but have drawn a blank. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

The symbol of a heart in two pieces is trite, anymore.  So I suggest a long-stemmed rose that has been crushed underfoot.

How about a  collage involving a photo of a loving family in Iraq,  juxtaposed with a photo taken of the ravaged civilian bodies after the latest bomb blast in Baghdad , and a picture of our vacant eyed "president" playing golf with some of his "elite" criminal friends while they plot their next scam? :)

Hmmm.  On second thought maybe not,  you might be labeled a dissenter/terrorist.  Some food for thought though eh?
