How would you teach English to young children??

If you were chosen to teach English to young children (four - ten years --... and of course, you would speak the children's native language fluently) how would you do it? Where would you start?

I think I would teach them...

1) How to introduce themselves; and first words

2) Rules for speaking English

3) The alphabet; pronounciation

4) More words, including number from 1- 20, days of the week and months of the years.

Have I got it just about right? (It's just the basics, though. Nothing complex...)

Thanks heaps! 10 points for the most useful answer!

  1. make them sit in front of the T.V.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. well just talk to them alot about u no the stuff u wanna teach them and they will pickit up u no

  3. use picture/word cards and speak the word pointing to the picture for that word. They can be bought at any education shops or you can make them your self putting them onto cardboard.

  4. that is how schools teach the world over, so i guess the pattern work. Music is also an engaing way of teaching them.

  5. Yes, that sounds right. You can also give them all new names like 'beach ball', 'apple', 'elephant' and 'blue'. Then give them badges with a picture of their 'name'. The other kids have to remember the word for that colour/object/animal if they want to talk to that person. My teacher did this, and it was really fun! It also worked better than being given a list of vocab to learn.

  6. I was born in Romania and I came to the U.S. at around three and had to learn English. Try speaking to them, but repeating what you said if not word for word in English. Also, read to them to or try and try them to get to read really really really easy english books as well. That is what helped me, my mom forced me to read those little kids books and I now get top scores in reading and writing, even though English is my second language. I use bad spelling and grammar on here tho because its easier for me, im impatient lol

  7. You need to drill the words, hard. You must spend a long time doing this, but u can make it more interesting by getting them to do repetitive actions like jumping, standing up and sitting down, turning around for instance while saying it. This keeps the kids from getting bored and distracted.

Also alternate the way you drill, loud and quiet drilling. Triple and quadruple drilling, fast, slow, emotional style for instance angry, sleepy, happy etc.

Drilling is the most important aspect of teaching children children whose first language isnt English.

  8. i think the best way to teach english can be as follow:

you have to master first children language then teach english by using the familiar words i mean how to greet someone in english to eat and so one also to teach them on oral comprehension (oral and speaking) and finaly emphasize the learnig practise on plays because by playing children learn rapidly
