It depends on the cell company, if you know the cell phone you'll be sending is a Iusacell, or Unefon you could easily go to their website and send the SMS.

If it's Movistar, then you have to register to send up to 5 SMS on a daily basis.

If it's Telcel, then you cannot do it for free.

try using instant messaging.  like create a profile for your friend and under phone number type that persons number and send messages.  it works for me
