How wrong is it to misplace items in a department store?

If you are shopping along at Target and put back three pairs of socks in the snack isle? Or your in the tool section and decide to put back a mega-pack of toilet paper.

Do you put items you no longer want to buy back on their original shelf?

Or do you just set the item down any old place for an employee to come around and pick up (after all, it is their job..).

If you are an employee or manager of a department, retail, or grocery store, how do you feel about messy customers? Is it a big deal? Are you guilty of misplacing items too?

  1. I used to just leave things wherever, After I worked at a clothing store I stopped doing that, because I didn't like when I just organized something and people mess it up, or leave clothes in the dressing room when they could just bring them out =/ so ive changed my ways

  2. Rarely, it depends on how my shopping experience was.  If I ended up frustrated and ready to leave the store, unable to find what I wanted exactly, I may be more inclined to make extra work for the employees.  I don't make a habit of it, though.  If the employees look fat, bored and lazy, I feel less guilty.  At the gym, I try to put weights in their spot on the rack out of courtesy, but if I don't like the employee working, I tend to leave them on the floor, which may be mostly subconsciously.  :-)

  3. I dont know but i always but unwanted items anywhere

  4. I don't believe in making more work for people.  Occassionally, if I can't find where I originally located an item to return it I will ask a clerk for help and they usually just take it from me.   When I am on my own and can't find the exact place I put it somewhere close to where it should be.   By the way, as far as "thier jobs" are concerned, the more time they spend putting back those items that people "misplace"  means less time for them to be spending on people that are trying to find things in the right place.

  5. As a shopper, I think it is wrong to just put something on the other end of the store if you decide you do not want it anymore.  Give it to the cashier when you ring out, so it can end up in the right return bin.  What REALLY bothers me is finding someone didn't want something that needs to be refrigerated, and they put it on the cereal shelf.  If the store puts it back in the fridge, someone else could get sick.   If they throw it away, they lose money.

  6. I worked at a department store when I was 19 and found it pretty annoying to constantly straighten up after customers.  Now that I'm older I realize that when people go shopping they're not really in the MOOD to keep a store organized.  If the area where you found something is moderately close I'd say go ahead and put it back.  But if you got those batteries on the OPPOSITE end of the store then just go ahead and put them down.  You've got places to be.

  7. I must confess that I am pretty responsible for putting back items I have decided not to purchase in their respective places.  I would say my success rate for doing that is about a 9 out of 10 (there are few days that I can be tired).  But, by not putting items back in the right place has many negative impacts:

    1.  If I wanted to find a black sweater (for example) I would first to the sweater department and then at all black styles. If dropped off by the customer in a hurry and placed in the toy department -- how the heck would I know to look there?!

    2. Not only does the store miss the sale, but they do have to pay their floor help to find these stray items and put then back in the correct display, etc.

WHat really bothers me is when my husband and I go to Barnes & Noble in our area, they allow food and drink to be taken into the adjoining Starbucks where people will sit and read while sipping their special cafe latte' . Anyway, back to being annoyed -- there are many people who bring over several books, their latte', a muffin, etc. and when done, they just get u[p, literally leaving the books, their empty coffee cups right there in front of me!!

  8. I used to work at the Dollar Store, and what annoyed me most was when people would leave perishable items on any shelf. I found ice cream in the shampoo isle one time, hot dogs in the pet isle. or when someone would eat or drink something while in the store, and just leave the empty container anywhere! Also, when someone would lay something down only a few feet where it originally belonged! I mean, it was right there! Grrr...

  9. I put them back where they belong. I have tried to just drop them in other places but always end up feeling guilty.

  10. In some places the employees are not allowed to go home until everything is put away.  So you could be costing them extra time they could be sleeping.

  11. I worked retail for the past 3 years, and yes it is very annoying. But as an employee we need something to do. It was our job. And something to complain about always brings coworkers together. I am out of retail thank god! but to answer your question. if it is not convenient for you to walk and put it back the best would be to give it to the cashier. they usually have a go-back cart!
