My wife and I are going to be separating in November and my mom has asked that her and I get a place together so that we can pay it off together. I have a very good relationship with mom and I also have a 5yr old son. I want to get my own place later down the road but need to be able to afford it first and moving in with her after November will help quite a bit. How do I tell her that I don't want to get a house together cause I want to do my own thing without breaking her heart.

  1. Your mom sounds like a leach unless you plan for her to be watching the son alot.  Tell her that either one of you will get the house and the other will pay rent to the homeowner/leaseholder...

  2. You don't need to give any specifics, just tell her that you have other obligations right now.  It won't be a lie, because your first obligation is to yourself and your son.  Saving money to provide for yourself and your son is the future is a legitimate need.

  3. Put your GI Joe underoos on and be a man. Say "Thanks Mom but no thanks"

  4. Be, totally honest with your mom. Tell her that even though it sounds like a good idea for both of you right now, in the near future you will need and want a place of your own. Offer to help her get a place of her own, and tell her that your willing to move in and pay rent, but you don't want to buy the house with her. Or you can buy the house, and she can move in with you and pay rent. Either way, your both helping each other out, and one of you has a house while the other saves up for one. The other benefit of this, is that your son will get to spend a lot of time with grandma. This could also be an advantage to you, having a babysitter around. If you do decide to go this route, you need to make sure that she understands, that this is just a temporary living situation. You might even want to set some goals on how long it take you to get back on your own. And be upfront and honest with her, when it's time to move on.
