Putin's got to be careful.  I'm sure he wants to make an example of Georgia to other nations considering EU and/or NATO membership, but too much destruction could backfire.

If Ukraine decided they were in imminent danger, they could negotiate a completely separate treaty with Europeans for protection and then have the time to meet EU requirements later.

You're question doesn't really make sense but to answer it in how I think it sounds no sound logic country in the world would even dare to intervene militarily in support of Georgia. Russia is far too powerful with a massive arsenal of weaponry that any country, even America, who goes to war with Russia is bound to come reduced to ashes or come out limping. America knows it is powerful and can take on Russia but it won't because our government knows the ultimate response Russia can put on and the consequences and therefore because of this assessment our government has decided to just stand back and watch while our Georgian ally gets ravaged by Russia. All our government can do is voice our concerns and anger no more no less.

umm u know guys its pretty cool tht u can write such rational responses based on wht u believe its true.. but hey try to imagine.. and wht if the mass media is turnin the things upside down and tht its not russia being agressive in this one, but georgia.. ok i know its doesnt make sense, how come tht such trustful sources like bbc, cnn, newsweek and others wud ever turn the facts like tht but ummm.. doesnt it look suspicious tht they only take the information from georgian president? no interviews from russian president, from ossetian ppl? the video tht was presented as the russian forces attackin georgia durin the olympics was actually georgian forces attackin south osetia the night before the olympics, it was shown on russian local tv back then, and only the next day russian forces moved to georgia, and like 12 thousand of osetians migrated to russia now. u wudnt try to say they were forced to, wud u?

dont know why im writing it here, fat chance tht anyone wud even think about it, but hey dont take everythin thts shown in mass media n believe it blindly

A few calm heads are needed to calm the situation. Georgia are pulling back but the Russians are maintaining their attack.

What I think anout the question.
