How young did you start your child's potty training?

I am looking into starting potty training on my little boy, he will be 2 in October. He is very interested in what we "do" in the bathroom, and likes to remove his own wet diapers and finds his own quiet spot to p**p. I'm in no rush but I would like to hear what ages you started your children, and any secret methods you had to get them to go. We can catch him when he's about to p**p when we watch because he sneaks off into a corner, so we try to put him on his potty chair to do that, but other than that its a guessing game. I've been told from "various" people (even though I think that they are full of it) that they had their kids trained at 1 and 18 months. Thanks.

  1. First of all how annoying would it be if your kids really were potty trained a 1 or 18 months! I'd rather let them pee in a diaper so I could finish my grocery shopping lol! Some of them are full of it for sure. I think the older moms get the foggier their memories are.

My oldest daughter was about 18 months when I got her a potty seat and started "training" but she was still in diapers until about 2 1/2. I still had a hard time keeping her dry at night until recently. My youngest daughter showed absolutly no intrest in even sitting on the potty until she just turned three and then "bam!" she was potty trained and dry through the night! I swear I thought she was going to wear diapers forever and I thought I was doing something horribly wrong! So finally my girls are 6 and 4 now and our home has been clean and dry for quite some time so it should be interesting when the new baby comes in a month and we get to start over again!

I recommend letting your son wear real underwear whenever convienent at home. Those diapers are just too absorbent and he will notice whats going on if it's icky.

  2. every kid is different, you know best!  He seems very young though! I would never pressure a kid into potty training until they are completely ready mentally and physically.  My eldest trained at 2 but I now have a 3 year old that hasnt had a clue until now!

    Best of luck

  3. We started potty training around two and a half. But it failed miserably -- my daughter just wasn't ready yet and she refused to use the potty when she wore any clothing. It was kind of funny.

We made a few more attempts, and by age 3 she was able to wear clothing AND go peepee in the potty. It took a few months, though, to coax her to go poopy in the potty. She was not a big fan of it at all. We gave her M&Ms for each p**p, and that worked like a charm.

Each child is different. Some potty train so easily. Others have hangups about using the potty.

A few M&Ms are an excellent reward. Just give them lots of praise. Don't make it a traumatic experience by forcing them.

  4. My daughter would follow us into the bathroom as soon as she started walking around 10 months.  I bought her a seat that goes on the toilet so that her little bum wouldn't fall in at 12 months.  I didn't actively try to train her until she was about 17 months.  Before that I just sat her on her seat whenever I went potty.  She liked to flush the toilet, so I would wipe her as if she had gone and let her flush.  It wasn't until she started at a daycare that she wanted to actually go in the toilet.  Her class was a mix of 18-36 months, so some were trained while others were not.  She liked playing with the older kids who were trained and basically trained herself.  She was fully trained (day and night) by 19 months.  She's now five and I honestly can not remember the last time she had a potty accident (it's been at least a year).

  5. I waited till my kids wanted to use the toilet. It was non stressful and they didn't wet as they were ready. I didn't need to ask "do you need to go to the toilet" every 5 minutes. They could hold on from the beginning and it all went well. My son was 2.5 his twin sister was 2 months off 3

  6. I got the idea in to his head around 18mth to 2yrs but he wasn't ready until 2.5 years. It took about 3 weeks to get him dry day and night which was very lucky, but I think that's because I left him until he was really really ready. Having said that he didn't do poops in the potty/toilet until he was nearly 3yrs the thought of it just freaked him right out so I just let him do it at his own pace and eventually he just did it out of the blue and we haven't looked back since.

  7. all my children were potty trained by a year.... BUT it takes determination  and effort to do it.. you have to be consistant and yes every child will and can be differant , it depends on you as a mom how fast you want it done!
