Howard Hughes?

Howard Hughes?

what do you think of this script...could anyone tell me what I could improve in this script about Howard Hughes for my presentation?

Hello. I don’t know if all of you know me, but if you have been to Las Vegas, there is a street there that is named after me. If you have not been to Las Vegas but have seen the movie The Aviator, you definitely know me. No, I’m not Leonardo Caprio. I am who Leonardo Caprio portrayed in the movie. My name is – I’ll give money to the one who can guess who I am. ( somebody will certainly say Howard Hughes)

Yes, you are absolutely right. I am Howard Hughes. I was once the richest man in the world. Because you guessed my name correctly, I am going to give you a portion of my wealth. (Give him 50 cents).

You might be wondering what these are for. Well, you see, I hate germs. (show picture of germs) Germs make me sick (cleans hands with sanitizer, wipes table with alcohol). People call me hypochondriac , but I disagree with them. I am simply afraid of getting sick. So please do not come closer than 10 feet from me, or my bodyguards will kick you out.

I told you I was once one of the wealthiest men in the world. Well, I was born rich. My father Howard, Sr.(show picture) was a good businessman. He sold power tools around the country and became rich. Since my birth on December 24, 1905, my mother (show picture) took care of me. She was an overprotective mother; she protected me from germs. Now, you know why I hate germs. My mother died when I was ________. My mom’s death devastated my father. He became depressed and died a few years after. Then I was left alone but with my father’s millions. I became a rich man.

With my fortune, I began to pursue an interest of mine since I was a boy – that of making movies. So, my wife and I – by the way, I married a rich woman whose name is Ella Rice (show picture) - we moved to Hollywood to make movies. The first movies I produced did not do well in the box office but I kept on trying. With the movie Hell’s Angels which is about the First World War airmen, I finally hit a blockbuster. I was so immersed in this movie that before it was over, my wife was gone. She left me. She divorced me.

But I dated other women from Hollywood (show pictures)– Katharine Hepburn, Billie Dove, Terry Moore, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner, Jean Peters.

I blazed new trails in Hollywood. I made the movie “Scarface,”(show picture) which the censors agency banned for being too violent, and the movie, “The Outlaw,” (show picture) which the censors also classified as too s**y. But I went to court and fought for these movies and I won. They can’t put good movies down.

Hollywood made the name Howard Hughes a popular name, but when people today hear my name, they will not associate it with Hollywood but with flying(show picture of man flying)..no, not that flying but this flying (show picture of airplane). That’s why they call me The Aviator. (show pictures). I was a mean pilot. I flew the best flying machines in my time and I flew to win contests and set speed records. I even designed the planes I flew. (show picture of winged bullet) That picture you see there is called the Winged Bullet. With that machine, I set a speed record of 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds – a record which held up for 7 years and won for me the Harmon International Trophy which is the Golden Cup in flying. (show other pictures) That plane is called Lockheed 14. That is the plane I used to set a record for flying around the world within 3 days, 19 hours and 17 minutes. This made me some sort of a national hero in the US. I still remember the applause of the American people when I landed. (sound of applause and picture of people applauding).

(Show picture of Spruce Goose) This monster is called the Spruce Goose, the biggest airplane ever made in history. I designed it. It’s tail was tall as eight-story building; the wingspan was longer than a football field.

(Show picture of XF-II). This one I built as a spy plane. I have a bad memory with this plane, I was test-flying it when all of a sudden it went down wildly and crashed badly to the ground. Of course, I survived. Nobody and no plane can put a good man down!

I may be a shy, awkward, and sickly person but when I am up there in the sky, I feel like I own the universe, I feel power, I feel invincible(show picture/film clip of him flying)

Now, you might want to know how I became one of the richest men in the world. Simple. I built planes and helicopters and sold them to the military and to airline companies. I have my own aircraft company and I also invested in TWA (show picture) and became a major stockholder there. You might have read nasty things said about me with some politicians and press people calling me all sorts of names – corruptor, lawbreaker or whatever name. Do not believe in these rascals. They are just envious of my achievements and wanted to destroy my political and business connections. If I were an evil person, the government would not have dealt with me. Even the CIA asked for my help. I am just a misunderstood person.

I founded the Hughes Medical Institute that served the medical needs of poor people. I donated millions of dollars to charities.

  1. You've done a good job with the script. I found it to be entertaining as a fan of Mr. Hughes. A brilliant man.

  2. Very well done and good presentation.  It might be worthwhile to mention his father's wealth came from developing the Hughes 'Rock Bit', creating 'Rotary Drilling' and completely revolutionizing the Global Drilling industry.  Prior to this wells weren't drilled, they were punched, with a chisel type device that was droped, hauled out and dropped again.  The rotary drill allowed better control and a means of introducing fluids, 'chemical mud' to treat the well and remove cuttings.

As this would have happened when Hughes was a young boy, his father's success my have fueled an innovative spirit in him.

Also his making of 'h***s Angels' was an epoch in itself in his dedication to portray 'real' dogfight imagery

You might also briefly mention Hughes employed his engineering skills to design an under-wired, cantilevered bra to emphasize Jane Russel's assets in 'Outlaw'.  http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/bonnie/20357... (This site contains the cute trivia, that in 2007, Vogue magazine celebrated the fact that 100 years ago that fall, their magazine coined the term "brassiere," which means "jelly doughnut" in French.

  3. Fine job. You might work in how he was forced out of TWA.

.It's sounds like something that would have pissed him off.

at it was probably one of his last public battles.

    ....

TWA suffered from its late entry to the jet age and in 1956 Hughes placed an order for 63 Convair 880s at a cost of $400 million. The transaction was to ultimately result in Hughes losing control of the airline because outside creditors financing the deal did not want Hughes controlling development and operation of aircraft.

Hughes formally relinquished power in 1961 in the battle of the purchase of the Convairs. In the deal, Charles C. Tillinghast Jr. became chairman and was to oversee the airline until 1976. The battle over Hughes' control was to continue until a court order in 1966 forced him to sell his stock at a profit of $546 million (which he used to create new airline Hughes Airwest).
