Howard Kendrick shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Oakland Athletics 6-3 – MLB Update
Howard Kendrick put in a brilliant performance as he smashed two homers and Maicer Izturis led four double plays in the infield as the Los Angeles Angels beat Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Tuesday, September 12 at Oakland Coliseum in California.
Los Angeles Angels gave Mark Trumbo a night off in their encounter against the Oakland Athletics. Second baseman, Howard Kendrick, was moved to first and Maicer Izturis was put in his place on second. The move paid off as both Kendrick and Izturis had a
tremendous game.
Angels placed Jerome Williams on the mound while the home team went with Guillermo Moscoso. Williams lasted 4.1 innings, conceding three runs from seven hits. Moscoso on the other hand, was taken off after 4.2 innings, as he conceded three runs from five
hits.
Los Angeles kicked off the scoring with Erick Aybar in the top of the third. The short-stop ran home after out-fielder Peter Bourjos popped out to Brandon Allen and the Oakland player made a throwing error. Going 1-0 up, the club managed two more runs when
Kendrick led Izturis home with a two-run homer.
Oakland responded in the bottom of the third when Jemile Weeks led Michael Taylor home with a double. The A’s left-fielder also scored later when Josh Willingham was walked. With the score 2-3, the A’s equalised in the bottom of the fifth through short-stop
Cliff Pennington. The player ran home on a double from Willingham.
The scores were even and there were bullpen pitchers on both sides. It was Aybar who broke the deadlock again as he ran home on an Izturis close single. The Angels were 4-3 up and the Oakland Athletics were unable to respond.
It took a two-run homer from Kendrick in the top of the ninth to settle things easily. The hard hitter led Bourjos in style as he smashed Michael Wuertz 398-feet to left-field. The star was more than willing to talk to the press and he made an open statement
on his display in the field.
"Accidents, a couple of mistakes out over the plate," Kendrick said. "All I was trying to do was put a good swing on the ball.”
The Angels won the encounter after a two-game losing streak. Kendrick was happy to see his club in the chase again, 3.5 games behind the Texas Rangers.
"We had some tough losses, but at the same time, we're a good team. We have a lot of guys here who have battled. Jerome [Williams] had a tough start, but the bullpen came in and did a great job."
Kendrick had an amazing day, as the Angels dominated Oakland early in the game. The Athletics were unable to contain the aggressive offence of the Angels. Los Angeles will be looking to continue with their winning momentum in their next series. The only
question now is whether the Angels can take care of the Texans when they meet in the last series of the regular season.
