Howard Shu ousts Samuel Dunner in first round of Yonex Canada Open 2012 – Badminton News

Men’s Singles campaigner Howard Shu registered his class in opening round of Yonex Canada Open as he outclassed Samuel Dunner in Richmond on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.
This first round match lasted only for 27 minutes as the US shuttler locked the honour by registering 21-15 and 21-16 at a rapid pace.
The local badminton arena was jam-packed as the presence of a native shuttler attracted huge crowd.
However, it was a disappointing day for them as Samuel Dunner put a below-par performance and bid adieu to the home event.
Meanwhile, Howard Shu stood full to his stature in pressure situations and sealed a splendid straight-set victory.
He started the ball rolling in the first set of the match as he wrapped this segment with a distinctive lead of six points in the final result.
Though, he was bit sluggish in start and trailed behind in opening rallies but then few back-to-back points helped him to gain the upper hand.
In first half, Samuel showed some spark and kept his rival at the lower end but he could not maintain this tempo after 4-1 and stayed down in remaining part of the game.
First sign of trouble came when Howard Shu stepped forward by gathering three consecutive points and then left his competitor far behind with 11-8 margin.
The US campaigner managed to pocket valuable points at a steady pace and reached the score of 15-12 in the third quarter.
At this stage, he dominated in three nonstop rallies which ultimately helped him to finish the first set with an impressive figure of 21-15.
Both contenders were poles apart in following segment of show as Samuel again failed to revive his lost form and got pale in crucial moments.
The Canadian was completely off colour as he looked confused throughout the decider. He committed fatal mistakes straight away in the beginning and allowed his challenger to pile up a decent total of 7-2.
Howard Shu made the best out of this initial advantage and placed an 11-8 margin in the first half. He earned the right to be in next round by registering 21-16 score on the board.
Now his next challenge is to surpass Scottish player Alistair Casey to secure a pre quarter-finals berth.
