Howard Webb awarded Member of the British Empire
The referee of the FIFA 2010 World Cup final, Howard Webb has been awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) award. The referee was happy with the honour given to him and believed that the accolade was the perfect way to end a year filled with achievements.
The former police sergeant received the award in the New Year Honours List and was chosen as the World’s best referee for the year 2010. Webb was in-charge of football’s top matches of the season, namely the UEFA 2009/2010 Champions league final and the
FIFA 2010 World Cup final.
The player is currently on a five year leave from the South Yorkshire Police and, is the first referee in history to manage both fixtures in the same year.
"It has been an unbelievable 12 months and this honour tops off an amazing 2010 where everything just fell into place. It will be a real treat to go to the Palace with my wife and family and it should be a marvellous occasion," stated the English referee.
Howard Webb managed a clean UEFA Champions league final, which http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan won comfortably with a 2-0 victory over the German Giants; Bayern Munich. However, the World Cup final had extraordinary tension and emotion attached to the match and Webb agreed
that it was one of the toughest matches he officiated in his career.
In the final, a total of 14 yellow cards were dished out, two of them awarded to Johnny Heitinga as the Dutch defender was sent off. Webb, along with his team of assistants, felt honoured to be chosen for the World Cup final but was tense each time they
gave a foul or the 14 yellow cards.
"I always say refereeing is about your team, and without the support and ability of my assistants Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey I would not have been selected for the final, so this honour is for them too and it would be lovely if they could be recognised
in a similar way at some point in the future,” stated Howard Webb.
